Sebastian Guinness Gallery : Solo Exhibition by James Nares
on June 13th, 2008.

James Nares has presented a solo exhibition, for the first time in Ireland.

James Nares (b. 1953) is a gestural-abstractionist par excellence. Nares makes his bold, highly-stylised marks by physically suspending himself above the painting on a homemade sliding contraption which enables him to drag a loaded brush in its sweeping calligraphic path across the canvas.

When looking at this body of work, one recalls Lichtenstein’s Pop parodies of the Abstract-Expressionist gesture. Yet this is no parody, but an eloquent exploration of movement, gesture and surface. Each Nares painting comprises one single brushstroke: Fluid, dynamic, energetic, the brushstroke swoops and zig-zags across the canvas, its lush pigments capturing the artist's physical gesture in a strikingly three-dimensional form.

A New York artist, Nares' biography lists numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and London as well as inclusion in some of the most exciting curated group exhibitions of the last thirty-five years including shows at MOMA and The Drawing Centre, New York. His work, which is highly sought after in both the United States and Europe, will be available for the first time to Irish collectors and art lovers. Expect a world-class show by an artist of stature, in Dublin’s newest exhibition space, the Sebastian Guinness Gallery.

The show continues until 11th July
